Day 2 Melbourne to Ocean Dunes

Please be at Essendon Airport no later than 0645am for our first flight at Main Terminal Building, 72 Hargrave Ave, Essendon Fields Airport. At 0730am we are airborne on our Pilatus PC-12 to Tasmania. Landing at King Island Airport, only 5 minutes to our gorgeous Ocean Dunes Golf Course.

The architect, Graeme Grant, chose fescue for the tees and fairways and bentgrass to carpet the greens at Ocean Dunes. The course was duly and very beautifully built by Bernie McMahon of McMahon Golf. Six of the holes are located hard against the coast, with par threes at the 130-metre 4th and 210-metre 10th vying for the signature hole. The former plays across a rocky inlet from a tee perched above the waves and the latter features a similar forced carry across water to a Redan green that slopes from front right to back left. It feels like fun.

After the surely exhilarating round, we transfer up the North Road to Cape Wickham where we spend the night at the 16 villa style rooms with each room boasting unparalleled views across the golf links, with The Cape Wickham Lighthouse in the distance. Take in the ocean view from your private deck and indulge in the amenities available to our guests. Tomorrow we play the world-famous Cape Wickham Links.

Ocean Dunes Tasmania
Day 3 Cape Wickham

Here is a unique collection of coastal holes cleverly routed around Cape Wickham Lighthouse. This course is a testament to pure links golf that you will not soon forget. Every hole on the course has an ocean view, which is extremely rare. The undulating course normally plays firm, allowing the imagination to go wild with limitless shot-making possibilities. Tees, Fairways and Greens are all seeded with fescue grass, following in the footsteps of those old traditional links courses found in Scotland.

The course is ranked No. 2 in Australia and No.24 in the world. It will stay in your memory for a very long time. After completion, we return down the North Rd to our Jet which has been loaded with King Island cheeses purchased at cellar door prices. Tasty nibbles for the 45-minute flight down to Barnbougle where we actually land on the golf course itself.

Day 4 Barnbougle Dunes

Whilst the rolling fairways of the courses, set amongst the wild and dramatic landscape, look as though they were established long before we could jump on a plane and fly across Bass Strait to Tasmania, it was in just 2004 that the first course opened for play. Designed by renowned modern golf architect Tom Doak and course designer Mike Clayton, Barnbougle Dunes was once a strip of land along the coast of a potato farm on Tasmania’s north-east coastline.

The Dunes has maintained a position as the number one public access course in Australia. Currently rated #4 course in Australia (by Australian Golf Digest), #34 course in the World (US Golf Magazine) and #11 course in the World (US Golf Digest), Naturally, the Dunes is a regular on many ‘must play’ lists all around the planet.

We are guests at The Lodge for the next two nights. This evening we recommend the Lodge Restaurant which overlooks the course and serves fresh Tasmanian produce.

Day 5 Lost Farm

After a hearty breakfast, we are faced with another golfing gem that is just across the river from The Dunes. Welcome to the gorgeous Lost Farm. Despite the close proximity to The Dunes, here is remarkably different, featuring 20-holes that wind along the coast through the coastal sand dunes. Ranked as the #2 public course in Australia by Golf Australia Magazine, and #23 in the World by US Golf Digest. Designed and built by world-renowned US golf course design company Coore & Crenshaw, Lost Farm has quickly captured the attention of international golfers of all abilities. Please enjoy your golf here today.

After we have completed this once-in-a-lifetime twin experience, we drive south for Ratho Farm, with beautiful local scenery to enjoy.  Stay the night here in unique surroundings.

Royal Hobart offers play for both members and visitors on the best maintained course in Tasmania providing premium playing conditions all year round. The facilities at Royal Hobart provide the perfect way to sharpen your game before heading out on the challenging 18 hole layout with a large putting green, chipping area and two practice fairways to choose from.

Original course designer, Vern Morcom, made best use of the natural sand base to construct over 80 fairway and greenside bunkers. These are a special feature of the course that adds an important dimension to how players of all levels approach their game. Long term course improvements ensure Royal Hobart continues to offer a challenging golfing experience for members and visitors alike. Subtle changes are introduced, but always conforming to the original design concept. This is a wonderful day of golf.

Royal Hobart Golf Course
Day 10 7-Mile Beach

Once completed and open in 2025, the links golf course will bolster Hobart’s golf scene and the location is simply awesome.

The breathtaking links layout – designed by Mike Devries and Mike Clayton – is set on a stunning property. Massive sand dunes dominate the landscape and the views of Tiger Head Bay below are remarkable, especially from the 18th green – on one of the highest points of the course. Like its fellow Tasmanian courses at Barnbougle and on King Island, 7 Mile Beach will be a bucket list destination for world golfers.

Once we are back at the hotel, we have a farewell party with our new friends.
